Walkers in North Carolina, Watch Out!

Pedestrian hit by car

I’m in disbelief after learning that North Carolina is on the Top Ten list for most Dangerous States in the nation for “Pedestrians”. The numbers on pedestrian deaths and accidents in North Carolina seem crazy. I read something like 17% of the North Carolina traffic fatalities were pedestrian deaths. Nearly 200 pedestrians died last year in North Carolina, that’s nuts. This is considering that only around 8% of all pedestrians involved in a motor vehicle crash were killed.

Mecklenburg, Cumberland, Wake and Guilford counties were some of the most dangerous in North Carolina and were responsible for over a third of the last year’s pedestrian casualty totals.

While some believe that it would never happen to them, I call this an everyday risk. You or I could be the walker, the driver, or the business owner. It’s all painful.

I’m reminded of several insurance claims. The first one; the client swerved to avoid slamming into the braking car ahead. The second was a commercial insurance client who’s driver didn't see the pedestrian and couldn't stop his big rig in time. Thankfully, there was great insurance coverage and they both escaped financial hardship.

It’s sad and it’s a reminder to all of us to commit to being an UNDISTRACTED driver. Focus only on driving, when driving. My favorite delivery of this message is my friend’s bumper sticker that reads “Put your cell phone down and concentrate on being a Shitty driver.”

What if you were the driver and you were sued for your liability? Does your auto insurance limit have enough coverage to protect your own personal assets from legal suit? Do you have an Umbrella Insurance policy? Would you have to file BK if you were liable for $1MM in damages?
